Rosa canina or Dog Rose is a species of Rosa in the family Rosaceae. It is native to Europe, northwest Africa and temperate part of western Asia. Rosa canina is a scrambling, deciduous shrub that grows to a height of 1-5 m. Its stems are covered with small, sharp, and curved thorns, making it easier to climb up supports and trees. The leaves are pinnate, with 5-7 leaflets and serrated margins. The striking, five-petaled flower is 4-6 cm in diameter, and come in shades of pink and white. The bright red hips are high in vitamin C and are gathered in autumn.
