Rosa glauca, Rose

  About Tim & Esther

Rosa glauca is a species of Rosa in the family Rosaceae. It is native to the mountains of central and southern Europe. This rose is also known as Red-leaved Rose or Redleaf Rose, because the leaves are tinged with red, as are the stems. Rosa glauca is formerly known as Rosa rubrifolia.

Rosa glauca is a deciduous shrub with sparsely bristled and thorny arching stems, and can grow up to 3 m tall. The red-tinged grayish-purple leaves are 5-10 cm long, with 5-9 leaflets. The pink flowers with white center and gold stamen are borne in a cluster of 2-5 in early summer, followed by oval, dark red hips in autumn.

Rosa glauca grows well in full sun, fertile, humus rich and well-srained soil. This rose plant is resistant to black spot. Propagation is by softwood cuttings in spring or hardwood cuttings in autumn.
